Liposuction is an extremely popular plastic surgery all over the world. In China, India, South and Central America, and of course, North America and Europe, and even the Middle East looking good with the help of a little plastic surgery have become a world phenomenon. One factor contributing to the world liposuction statistics and plastic surgery’s popularity in general – is the expanding middle class in many areas of the world (particularly those countries in the Asian continent).

*In 2008 in the United States women patients accounted for over 300,000 liposuction surgeries. More than 30,000 liposuction surgeries were done on men in the United States in 2008. This gender trend holds true across Europe and other regions of the world.

*In the United States liposuction statistics are noted by race. It appears that among African-Americans, Native-Americans and Latin-Americans – liposuction is the most popular plastic surgery procedure. For Caucasians, and Asian-Americans – breast augmentation beat out liposuction for the most popular plastic surgical procedure for the first time in 2008.

  • Liposuction procedures done in 2008 — 245,138
  • Liposuction procedures done in 2000 — 354,015
    • % difference, 2009 vs. 2008 — -19%
    • % difference, 2009 vs. 2000 — -44%
  • % of all cosmetic procedures done in 2009 — 13%
  • 2009 spending on liposuction surgery — $548,888,786
  • % change in liposuction for women, 2009 vs. 2000 — -57%
  • % change in liposuction for men, 2009 vs. 2008 — -18%

Although Americans spent almost $11.8 billion on cosmetic procedures last year due to tight economic times – there was over a 12 percent decrease in the total number of cosmetic procedures from the previous year.

Surgical procedures decreased by 15 percent, and nonsurgical procedures decreased by almost 12 percent.
